CALL FOR ARTISTS
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: Friday 12 July 2019
In conjunction with an international exhibition that IMMART is co-organising with M’BARAKA we are looking for visual artists to carry out workshops with young people aged 12-15 years, and a photographer and sound artist to document the workshops.

WORKSHOP: Student and Youth Movements in Society since 1989
INTRO
Students and student movements have been some of the major actors of resistance and catalysts for change since the middle of last century. Some of the most historically noted student protests leading up to and since 1989 include those during the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa which lead to the events of 1989, protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989, the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, protests by students at the University of Tehran in 1999, School Strikes for Climate since 2018, and in Denmark, Sjælsmark Børn protests against the detention center in 2018/19.
In 2-4 hour sessions individual or pairs of artists who also classify themselves as activists will workshop with children aged 12 – 15 years on the themes of the artist’s choice that relate to the most pressing issues of our times, for instance (non)discrimination, freedom of expression, inclusion/accessibility, and environmentalism. As well as reflecting on historical actions that have happened around the world, activities with the children may include creative writing, collage, painting/drawing, performance (e.g. poetry, prose, song, dance, mime etc.).
OUTLINE
- Depending on the amount of time the exhibition will run, there will be a minimum of 3 workshop sessions, each with a group of 10-12 children.
- Each workshop session will be lead by an individual or pair of artists.
- The duration of the sessions will be minimum 2 hours, maximum 4 hours
- The sessions will be documented using photography and soundbites
- The groups will work towards a final outcome (that they will design within their group) to be presented on the final day of the exhibition during a public event at the venue where the exhibition will take place
WORKING WITH CHILDREN
Individual or pairs of artists will work with children from one of the following types of institutions:
- Sjælsmark detention center
- A ‘special needs’ school e.g. Sputnik
- A public school in Nørrebro, e.g Nørrebro Park Skolen
- A private school in Copenhagen/Frederiksberg e.g. Det Kgl Vajsenhus
- An international school, e.g. Copenhagen International School
The institutions will be selected and contacted once the artists have been identified.
ARTISTS, FUNDING & TIMING
We are searching for artists who are usually resident in Denmark:
- Minimum 3 indidvidual or pairs of (broadly speaking) visual artists to work with the children
- One photographic artist to document each session
- One sound artist to document each session
PLEASE NOTE: Funding for artist honorars and materials will be applied for once the participating artists have been identified.
The exhibition will run for a minimum of three days and a maximum of 10 days from 14 November 2019, depending on funding and venue availability.
HOW TO APPLY

- Should your application be successful, we will require that you submit a full proposal for your workshop, including specifications of equipment required, materials (and material costs) and spacial needs one week after notification as the application for funding must be submitted before Friday 26 July 2019.
